EAST NORWICH OYSTER BAY HOSTS

LONG ISLAND NORTH DIVISION TRI-K FAMILY DINNER

The Tri-K Family Dinner Meeting is an opportunity for members of the Kiwanis International Family - Kiwanis, Circle K, Key Club, Builders Club, K-Kids, Aktion Club - to join together in fellowship. The officers of our Service Leadership Programs, (formerly called Sponsored Youth) are afforded the opportunity to jointly lead the divisional meeting and report on their activities during the year. Ideas are shared, friendships are made, joint activities are planned. Our younger members are inspired by our older members and our older members often receive new vision as they catch the enthusiasm and excitement of our youth.

The meeting, held on Monday, November 2nd, 2009,  was a Long Island North Divisional Council Meeting hosted this year by the East Norwich Oyster Bay Kiwanis Club, Kiwanis sponsors of the Great Neck North High School Key Club.  Chairing the joint meeting were Rosita Williams, Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor, Long Island North Division, Rickie Santer, Circle K Lieutenant Governor, Long Island Division, and Jennifer Kramer, Key Club Lieutenant Governor, Division IV.  First Presbyterian Church, Oyster Bay, graciously opened their Fellowship Hall to be used for the dinner and members of Hood African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Oyster Bay, decorated the venue, prepared and served the meal.

This year, the dinner meeting was the first of three joint events. The next will be on Kiwanis One Day, to be held on Saturday, April 10, 2010. All members of the Kiwanis International Family, throughout the world, will be engaged in joint projects for the day. The final event for the year will be a Kiwanis Family Picnic, tentatively scheduled for June.

Our sponspored Key Club from Great Neck North High School was well represented by Morgan Howard, Key Club Co-President; Emily Rothkrug, Key Club Co-President; Jen Kramer, Lieutenant Governor, Key Club, Division IV; Jordana Cohen, Key Club Advisor; Rev. Rosita Williams, Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor and Kiwanis Advisor.

A wonderful evening of camaraderie as the Kiwanis Family celebrated their commitment to the Kiwanis mission:  changing the world one child and one community at a time.

LEGION OF HONOR AWARD

for

30 YEARS OF KIWANIS SERVICE

This prestigious award was presented by Kiwanis International Vice President Thomas DeJulio at the celebration of the 53rd Anniversary of the Kiwanis Club of East Norwich Oyster Bay.

Rev. Ken was totally surprised by the receipt of this award and was even more surprised when he looked up and saw his daughter and son-in-law arriving at The Homestead Restaurant in Oyster Bay, the venue of the event, to help him celebrate! She brought warm greetings from her brother, fondly known as "Kenny, Jr.", a member of the club, who was unable to be present for the event.

East Norwich Oyster Bay Kiwanis Club Donates Pediatric Trauma KitsTo

Atlantic Steaner and Oyster Bay Fire Departments

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

Oyster Bay FD must put their kit to use almost immediately!!!

I guess the best way to thank someone for a gift is to let them know that their gift has been, or will be put to good use. A half hour after you presented us with the Pediatric Emergency Kits, OBFD and ASFC were toned out for a 9 month old child with an allergic reaction on Woodland Rd. The child was reacting severely to peanut butter. Our Captain, R.W. McEvoy, who is also a Nassau County Police Medic, was senior medic on the call, along with Capt. Rob Walles from ASFC. Bobby McEvoy dipped into the orange bag you had just given us, and used the brand new Pediatric stethescope that was enclosed in the kit to ausculate the child"s lung sounds. Bob said the new stethescope provided much clearer sound than the old one we had, which helped him determine which course of action to take. He also used the Pediatric oxygen mask enclosed. The child is doing fine.
Thank You and all of the Kiwanis once again for your kind generosity, and your selfless community service.

East Norwich Oyster Bay hosts

HOLIDAY BREAKFAST & TOY DRIVE

with a special visit from

Santa!

Sunday, December 19th, 2010 was a special day at the Oyster Bay Community Center. Those entering the building were greeted with the warm smiles of East Norwich Oyster Bay Club members, and the welcoming fragrance of pancakes, sausage, bacon, and coffee! Also on the menu were waffles, juice, hot chocolate. This all-you-can-eat event was open to the all residents of East Norwich and Oyster Bay and was supported by many businesses in those communities.

The highlight of the morning was a special visit from Santa himself. Almost everyone in attendance had the opportunity to reconnect with their "inner child" as everyone took turns sitting on Santa"s knee, telling him their secret wishes for the holiday seasons.  Even our Lt. Governor, Julia Salat, joined in the fun of the day!

The greatest wish was for health and happiness in the coming year for all those in need.

Worldwide Service Project – At the 2010 Kiwanis International Convention, The Eliminate Project – the new worldwide service project – was announced. In partnership with UNICEF, Kiwanis International will be working to successfully eliminate MNT (Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus), a disease that kills one baby every nine minutes. Its effects are excruciating—tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival and the mothers are also killed by tetanus. This disease is highly preventable. Just three (3) doses of a 60-cent immunization protects mothers who then pass on the immunity to their future babies. Just think about that:  $1.80 can save a life!!

Our fundraising campaign has begun. Information about this disease and receptacles to receive the donations will soon be located throughout town.  Stay tuned!

Long Island North Committee on Human and Spiritual Values – With East Norwich Oyster Bay serving as the host club, the Long Island North Division Committee on Human and Spiritual Values held a special memorial service on Saturday, September 11, 2010. “We Remember” honored the memory of the many victims of the September 11, 2001 tragedy. DPLG Pete Owens spoke of the impact the loss of his son, Pete Owens, Jr., had on his family. He shared with those gathered the story of his meeting with elementary school students six months after the tragedy and the inspiring talk he had with them. Pete has shared this story with many of us over the past few years, but his message seemed to take on new meaning as he reminded us of the fact that we all have been afforded the opportunity to have a September 12th. Use that opportunity to be better; better wives and husbands; better parents; better neighbors and friends. Use that opportunity to make better choices; to change things in our lives that hold us back from being the best we can be.
Lt. Governor Rev. Rosita George Williams also led those gathered in a somber remembrance of the men and women in the armed forces who have lost their lives or who are POWs and MIAs. We can never forget the sacrifices they have made or the deep pain that resides in the hearts of their loved ones.
While PLG Rev. Kenneth Nelson lightly struck the gong and Rev. Frank Williams lit the candles, Rev. Rosita read the names of Kiwanians and their loved ones. At that special roll call, their names were called, yet they could no longer answer as they have now passed on.
The service ended with a time of silence. Silence, not as a sign of mourning, but rather silence, for a time of remembrance. “They are gone, but we will always remember.”

EAST NORWICH OYSTER BAY PARTICIPATES IN YOUTH AWARDS DINNER

The Long Island North Division sponsored the 48th Annual Academic & Physical Fitness Awards Dinner, fondly called the “Youth Awards Dinner” on Monday, May 10th, 2010.  That evening, seven clubs, including East Norwich Oyster Bay, participated in awarding twenty-nine (29) unique students.

This award program started in 1962 by Past International President Anton “Tony” Kaiser when he was Lt. Gov. of Long Island North Division.  He appointed then PLG Henry Rockhill to chair an event that addressed the concerns of Former President John F. Kennedy regarding the physical fitness of young people in America.  Henry’s wife, a school principal, consulted with the Physical Education Department at her school and they suggested that 9th grade students who showed the greatest improvement in physical education would be best suited for the award.  Academic awards were later included, as well as extending the awards to 6th – 8th graders.

This year, PLG Robert Rosenthal served as Division Chairperson and did a marvelous job in coordinating all the aspects of this well-attended event.  New Hyde Park Past President Christine Early served as Dinner Chairperson, and, along with Kiwanis Club participants and school officials, presented the awards to each recipient.

Our club’s award recipients this year are as follows:

            Christopher B. – Academic                  Kevin C. – Academic

            Justin K. – Academic                           Shaday R. – Academic

The East Norwich Oyster Bay Kiwanis Club congratulates these fine young people, their parents, teachers, counselors, and supporters for their dedication and perseverance.  Our club is proud to bestow this honor upon them.

East Norwich Oyster Bay Kiwanis Club

Recognizes Treasurer Anthony "Tony" Testa and President The Reverend Kenneth L. Nelson

For Faithful Service

On Sunday, October 26, 2008, officers and members of the Long Island North Division of Kiwanis International joined with officers, members and friends of the East Norwich Oyster Bay Kiwanis Club to celebrate 52 years of Kiwanis Service.  During that occasion, long-time treasurer, Anthony "Tony" Testa was recognized for being one of the first Charter Members of the club, maintaining his faithful membership since December 1, 1956.

Tony"s love for Kiwanis is shown in his participation in many Kiwanis projects and fund raisers, which have brought in thousands of dollars.  He is never too tired nor too busy to lend a hand.  Joining him at the event were his wife, Dorothy, and their four children--Karen, Anthony, Jr., James and William.

DPLG The Reverend Kenneth L. Nelson, who serves as President this year, was also recognized for his 28 years of membership in the club.  During that time, "Rev. Ken" served as President several times, giving of his time and substance to help keep the club going, even as there were periods when the task seemed almost impossible.  In addition, he also was elected twice to the position of Lt. Governor, Long Island North Division.

Their devoted service was recognized with  plaques from the club, Letters of Congratulations from New York State Governor David A. Patterson and  Proclamations from Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi.

Divisional Council Meeting – East Norwich Oyster Bay was well represented at the September Long Island North Divisional Council Meeting, held on Monday, 9/13/10 at Piccola Bussola Ristorante in Mineola. In attendance were our President, PLG Rev. Kenneth Nelson, Secretary (and LIN Division Secretary) DPLG Edward (Woody) Ryder, Assistant Treasurer (and LIN First Gentleman) Rev. Frank Williams, Assistant Secretary, Westley Grady, and Lt. Gov. Rev. Rosita George-Williams. One of the highlights of that meeting was a presentation made by Joyce Mullen from Family and Children’s Association in Mineola. The organization offers many services to children, teens, adults, seniors and families including mentoring and tutoring, emotional and psychological services, family crisis management and support, sheltering runaway teens, vocational education, veterans’ services and housing, senior advocates, and financial counseling.
At the request of Lt. Gov. Rev. Rosita, each club in the division was asked to donate at least one backpack with school supplies for the school-aged children in their program. East Norwich Oyster Bay was able to donate four filled backpacks which were gratefully received by Ms. Mullen. We also look forward to inviting Ms Mullen to visit our club to make our community aware of the services Family and Children’s Association have available for anyone who may be in need of help.
Following the presentation and dinner, the division, once again, witnessed the traditional “changing of the guard” ceremony. The “Home Club of the Lieutenant Governor-elect” banner was passed from the North Shore Club to the Glen Cove Club, and the “Home Club of the Lieutenant Governor” banner was passed from East Norwich Oyster Bay to the North Shore Club. Both receiving club presidents were reminded of the importance of supporting these two new division leaders—Lt. Governor-designate Julia Salat (North Shore) and Lt. Governor-elect Phyllis Burnett (Glen Cove) as they assume their new roles on October 1. At the conclusion of the meeting, Lt. Gov. Rev. Rosita made her closing remarks and, upon officially adjourning the meeting, for the last time, placed the Long Island North Division, gong an gavel into the hands of Lt. Gov.-des. Salat with warm wishes for a successful year, and the promise of support, when and if needed.

On Tuesday May 18th Cafe Rustica hosted a charity dinner to benefit the American Cancer Society"s 2010 Relay for Life Great Neck NY. The Great Neck North Key Club, sponsored by the East Norwich Oyster Bay Kiwanis Club and led by Morgan H. and Brittany A., organized the evening as the kick-off event for Great Neck’s first Annual Relay for Life. The evening was a tremendous success. Rustica was filled to capacity from 4:30 until well after 10:00 PM, and 50% of the profits were donated to the 2010 Relay for Life event. Diners enjoyed performances by various students from Great Neck North High School. The highlight of the evening was a performance by recording Artist Jason Liebman. Jason played several tracks from his album, Sweet Sacrifice, which is available on i tunes. Jeffrey Phillips, owner of Cafe Rustica, presented the students with a check for $1800.00 at the Relay event on Saturday May 22nd.

American Cancer Society- 2010 Relay for Life Great Neck NY

Great Neck held its first ever Relay for Life on May 22nd, to benefit the American Cancer Society. The event, which took place on Saturday overnight until sunrise Sunday morning, was a tremendous success. The Great Neck North High Key Club, under the direction of Jordana Cohen, Key Club Advisor, took on the enormous task of organizing this event with the help of a planning committee of students, parents, school faculty and community members.  Erica Aryeh and Yvonne Howard coordinated parent volunteers and raffle prizes. For those who are not familiar with Relay for Life, participants sign up in teams and one person from each team must be walking at all times throughout the duration of the event. The Relay is meant to symbolize that cancer never sleeps and that we must all fight together against this disease.

The evening began with a dinner for cancer survivors and their families, organized by Joan Lazaunik, North High School Guidance Department Secretary, with generous donations from various local businesses. Susan Babkes, Social Studies Department Chair at the High School, played the piano and sang with Junior Stephanie Ohebshalom. After dinner, the cancer survivors joined the rest of the participants on the football field for the opening ceremonies. Susanne Marcus, ESL teacher at North High and Great Neck resident, told of her personal battle with cancer, which inspired the participants and kicked off the survivor’s traditional first lap. Just after sunset, there was a moving Luminaria Ceremony, where bags containing candles were lit either in memory of those that we have lost to cancer or in honor of those who continue to fight. As the bags glowed through the night, the over 350 participants walked laps around the track until sunrise.

The event featured musical performances by a faculty/student band led by North High Principal Bernard Kaplan, student band Tidbits and Magic by Key Club Immediate Past Lieutenant Governor Jen Kramer. There were several impressive raffle baskets donated by many local merchants. One of the highlights of the evening was a midnight presentation by Jeffrey Phillips, owner of Cafe Rustica. Mr. Phillips presented the Key Club officers with a check for $1800.00, the donations from the May 18th kick-off fundraising dinner held at Cafe Rustica.

**During the night there were games and activities while team members walked their laps. Bake sales and donated snacks and beverages were provided throughout the evening to keep the participants energized.

Also donated was a sunrise breakfast of fresh fruit, bagels, and banana bread, which recharged the participants just as the sun was rising. The event was a tremendous success and raised over $33,000.00.

**The Great Neck North Key Club members stated that the event was a great success, thanks to the generous donations of many local merchants and the support of the student body, faculty and administration of North High School. Special thanks to all the chaperones, teachers and parents who stayed for the entire night and made it possible for so many children to participate in such a wonderful event.

KIWANIS CLUBS WORLDWIDE CELEBRATE 96th BIRTHDAY

Kiwanis International is celebrating its 96th birthday today. The first Kiwanis club was chartered Jan. 21, 1915, in Detroit, Mich. Today, Kiwanis has grown to more than 8,000 clubs and nearly 600,000 members in 80 countries.

“We’re very proud of the past year and moving full speed ahead in our 96th year to continue serving the children of the world,” said Sylvester Neal, Kiwanis International president.

Kiwanis International, headquartered in Indianapolis, provides numerous opportunities for people to get involved and numerous benefits to members—friendship, fellowship, business networking—in addition to the service Kiwanis provides to children and communities.

Kiwanis International also includes Circle K International for university students; Key Club International for students age 14-18; Builders Club for students age 11-13; K-Kids for students age 6-12; and Aktion Club, for adults living with disabilities.

In 2010, Kiwanis announced The Eliminate Project: Kiwanis eliminating maternal/neonatal tetanus (MNT). Kiwanis is partnering with UNICEF to raise US$110 million by 2015 to fill the funding gap required to eliminate MNT.

The Eliminate Project’s campaign leadership team was recently appointed, instating Randy DeLay as chairman, and Dave Curry, Sue Petrisin and John Button as vice chairmen. The
leaders will build a worldwide team of more than 9,000 campaign leaders to mobilize Kiwanis’ nearly 600,000 members to raise needed funds to defeat MNT.

Other Kiwanis International programs include Kiwanis One Day, the first Saturday in April, when Kiwanis and its family of clubs join forces with their communities for a day of hands-on service, and Read Around the World, which encourages members to share with children the joy of books—from reading with them to getting them books of their very own.
